OKTAHA – It was no contest in the special Hobby Stock Shootout at Outlaw
Motor Speedway here early Sunday morning as Brookin Stephens smoked the field to
pick up the $2,000 first place money.
Stephens, from Spiro, had a six second advantage over Muskogee’s Randy Moses II,
and the rest of the field at the checkered flag. That margin came after a
restart on lap 22 wiped out an early six second lead Stephens had gained at the
midway point of the race.
After a fourth lap caution, Stephens led a quartet of drivers in running away
from the rest of the field. The hard charger, Moses, Dale Richardson (Muskogee)
and Lynn Combs (Fort Gibson) set a torrid early pace.
Combs finally fell out of the competition on lap nine, leaving it a three-car
chase.
Stephens started pulling away from the field on lap 10 and never was threatened
after that.
It was Stephens' second feature win of the season at OMS. He drove the yellow
number 56 car to his first win in week one of the season. The car is jointly
owned by Muskogee’s Johnny Tarkington and his son Jess Watson.
Moses established himself as the pre-race favorite with a blistering performance
in the qualifying race on Friday. He best Stephens by about four seconds in the
20-lap race.
Scheduled to start at 8 p.m., the races ended well past midnight. Drivers and
track officials spent approximately 45 minutes drying an extremely wet track.
At intermission, another 30 minutes was spend packing the clay oval.
Alan Frailey, Chouteau, built up a lead midway through the Modified feature and
then held off a determined charge by Muskogee’s Mike Withrow for his first win
at OMS. Frailey’s brother Randy won Friday’s feature.
Withrow just ran out of time in trying to catch A. Frailey. He got to second on
lap 17 passing Roger Sawyer, Broken Arrow, on the backstretch. By that time, the
winner of the race enjoyed a three second lead.
At the close of the race, Withrow was less than a half second behind. Frailey
led from lap two and survived two early restarts.
Sawyer was third followed by Delaney Erickson, Tahlequah.
Kreg Dobson took the lead on lap nine and pulled to an easy triumph in the
Economy Modified feature. In winning his first main event of the season, he had
a three second lead over Brad Campbell, Muskogee.
It was Campbell that Dobson passed on the backstretch for the win. Campbell had
led from the start.
Andy Morris, Okay, ran a distant third to the victor with Patrick Goodnight,
Braggs, fourth.
Dobson
James Gillian, Muskogee, took the lead on lap seven and led the rest of the way
to capture his first Pure Stock feature win of the season. He got by Muskogee’s
John Richardson and Andy Simmons on a restart after caution.
Simmons ran second for three laps until a flat tire forced him from the race.
Richardson did have enough car to catch Gillian.
Gillian became the fifth different Pure Stock feature winner in five races this
season.
